How it works
Our excursion begins with a visit to Atlanterhavsparken (Atlantic Sea Park), considered one of Northern Europe’s largest and most unique saltwater aquariums. An architectural landmark in its own right, the aquarium is cleverly integrated into the shoreline. Here, you can enjoy close encounters with marine life found along the Norwegian coast, as well as species from farther afield. Be sure not to miss feeding time for the otters (2:00 p.m.), penguins (2:30 p.m.), and seals (3:00 p.m.). You’ll also have the opportunity to sample local cuisine, including a delicious hot catfish cake served at the café overlooking the ocean. Afterwards, it’s time to explore Ålesund. The town was destroyed by fire in 1904 and subsequently rebuilt in stone, incorporating many creative flourishes of the Art Nouveau style. We’ll take a closer look at some of these remarkable buildings, while your guide explains what life was like in Ålesund in the past and how the town has evolved into the modern day. Bring your camera—and don’t forget to look up!
