Why sail on a Norwegian cruise in 2029?

A world-class ski event

In February 2029, Norway hosts the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships for the first time. This is the second-largest winter sports event in the world, after the Winter Olympics. Narvik, a key port city above the Arctic Circle in northern Norway, has the honor of hosting this adrenaline-fueled event. The ski slopes sit high above the city with incredible views over the fjord and out to sea.

You can visit Narvik on the northbound Arctic Line voyage, and The Arctic Circle Explorer. As part of our Signature voyages, these port stops are all over 5 hours long, giving you plenty of time to explore Narvik and soak up the atmosphere of the competition or even try skiing for yourself at Narvikfjellet Ski Resort.

Look skywards

Astro-tourism, travelling to destinations in search of amazing dark skies and other celestial wonders, is on the rise. And Norway is a top spot for astro-tourism. Alongside excellent opportunities for a Northern Lights cruise in 2029, we have a low population density (around 15 people per square kilometre) and plenty of green spaces with low light pollution.

In 2029, notable celestial events include: the Perseid meteor shower (12-13 August), the Geminid meteor shower (13-14 December) and the total lunar eclipse (20 December). The latter two will occur during Norway's Polar Night season, where the sun never fully rises in much of northern Norway, providing optimum conditions for spotting meteors or a blood-red moon against the night sky.

The Whale Architecture Vesteralen

Norway’s newest attractions

From a renowned photography museum to an innovative centre dedicated to whales, over the next few years there will be a flurry of new additions to Norway's cultural scene. In 2027, Oslo welcomes a newly refurbished Museum of the Viking Age, which hosts an extensive collection of objects from the era, including the best-preserved Viking ships in the world. And in Vesterålen, a new landmark centre (The Whale) combining art and science to honour whales opens its doors.

In 2028, Fotografiska opens a new site in Oslo. Learn about photography, art and culture at this cutting-edge photography museum housed in the historic Deichman building, formerly the main library.

Alta

Known as the Northern Lights Capital, Alta is one of Norway’s leading destinations for stargazing. Situated beneath the Auroral Oval, with long, dark winters, the city has a long connection with astronomy and aurora research. In 1899, the world’s first permanent Northern Lights observatory was established just outside Alta, helping to cement its reputation as a great destination for a Northern Lights cruise in 2029.

Visit in winter on The Arctic Line (northbound and southbound) or The Arctic Circle Explorer voyages for Northern Lights, UNESCO-listed rock art, Sámi culture and unforgettable winter adventures, such as snowmobiling and dog sledding.

Ride the Narvikfjellet gondola for panoramic views across the fjord, learn about Narvik’s role in World War II, or visit during the ski season for winter adventures.

Narvik will also be hosting the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 2029, bringing world-class skiers from around the globe. Visit Narvik on several of our Signature voyages – the northbound Arctic Line and The Arctic Circle Explorer – all giving you over 5 hours of time in port.

Trondheim

Founded by Viking King Olav Tryggvason in 997, Trondheim blends centuries of history with a vibrant modern culture. Once Norway’s Viking capital, the city is home to the striking Nidaros Cathedral, the northernmost medieval Gothic cathedral in the world and one of Scandinavia’s most important pilgrimage sites.

Visit Trondheim for up to 3 hours on The Coastal Express. Plenty of time to wander colourful Bakklandet, with its wooden houses, cafés and cobbled streets, or visit one of the city's many charming bakeries or restaurants.
