Journey from fjord to mountain on a scenic bus tour along Sognefjellet National Tourist Route, to the highest mountain pass in Northern Europe. Your guide brings the spectacular scenery to life with stories of the region’s history, geology and people, with several stops for photographs at viewpoints along the way.

Highlights

Travel Sognefjellet National Tourist Route to northern Europe’s highest mountain pass, on a scenic coach tour from Skjolden.

Admire scenery that rises from Lustrafjorden to the rugged glacial terraine of the high mountains.

Stop for photographs at panoramic viewpoints, and hear the stories behind the landscapes.

How it works

Lustrafjord – the innermost part of Sognefjord, Norway’s longest fjord – reaches far into one of Norway’s most spectacular regions. Here, deep waters shimmer below towering mountains that harbour glaciers, meadows and seemingly impossible roads. On the Sognefjellet National Tourist Route, you travel through its heart.

From Skjolden, you’ll follow the edge of Lustrafjorden before the road climbs into the high mountains. Watch the landscape shifts from lush valleys to rugged alpine terrain as your coach drives towards a horizon cut with the jagged peaks of the Hurrungane massif. At Sognefjellet, the road reaches 1,434 metres above sea level, making it Northern Europe’s highest mountain pass.

Along the way, your guide shares stories about the region’s history, geology and the people who have lived in and travelled through these mountains for centuries. You’ll pause at several celebrated viewpoints, such as Åsafossen waterfall and Mefjellet at the centre of the mountain plateau. From Mefjellet, you can see Fanaråken glacier and a stone sculpture by Knut Wold. Each stop reveals a different perspective on this dramatic route across the roof of Norway.
