This walking tour explores the important and exciting role Tromsø has played in polar expeditions since the city was founded in 1794.
Enjoy a fact-filled guided walk through the Arctic capital
Visit the Polar Museum and learn about Tromsø’s polar history.
Grab a local Mack beer at Ølhallen, the oldest pub in Tromsø.
We begin our guided walking tour along the waterfront, making our way toward the Polar Museum, housed in a historic 1830s warehouse on the seafront. Inside, you'll discover compelling stories about famous trappers and the legendary Arctic expeditions of Norwegian explorers Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen.
Next, we stroll through Tromsø’s historic city center, passing the old pier, the city’s oldest guesthouse, its oldest street, and the former home of Roald Amundsen.
We then visit Polaria, where you can watch Bearded Seals and Harbor Seals swimming, explore Arctic marine life in the aquariums, and experience Arctic phenomena in the panoramic theater.
On our way back to the pier, we stop at the monument to polar explorer Helmer Hansen and visit Ølhallen, Tromsø’s oldest pub. Here, you can enjoy one complimentary beer while soaking up the historic atmosphere.
