Antarctic Circle Expedition
Cruise Overview
Experience remote areas of Antarctica in late summer
18-day Antarctic Circle expedition starting in Buenos Aires before we sail from Ushuaia to Antarctica, to see spectacular wildlife like whales, sea lions and penguins.
Join breathtaking landings, expedition boat cruising and unforgettable hikes. We'll attempt to sail south of the Antarctic Circle and visit rarely-seen Marguerite Bay.
An optional Pre-Program takes you from Buenos Aires to wild Patagonia or join a Post-Program to the unforgettable Iguazu Falls.
Sail beyond 66°33' South
After a night in Buenos Aires, we fly to Ushuaia to board hybrid-powered MS Fridtjof Nansen and cruise south of the Antarctic Circle. Along the way, you'll encounter awe-inspiring icebergs, majestic sunsets, unique wildlife and elemental wilderness on an expedition of a lifetime.
The spirit of exploration
Nature sets our itinerary. The late summer season is the best time for whale-watching and to see young penguins growing their plumage. We’ll bring you ashore in Antarctica and take you out expedition boat cruising or kayaking every chance we get.

Dazzling Buenos Aires
Day 1
Dazzling Buenos Aires
Fire and flavor in Argentina’s capital
Buenos Aires is all about architecture, tango and steaks. You'll enjoy an overnight stay here, giving you a chance to sample its fiery flavor.
Head to a neighborhood bar for a tango performance before savoring sizzling Argentinian beef in one of the city's delicious steakhouses.
Make sure you also take in the beautiful architecture. The pretty-in-pink Casa Rosada is stunning, as is the National Museum of Fine Arts, displaying works by Van Gogh, Monet and Picasso.
Early flight to Ushuaia
Day 2
Early flight to Ushuaia
Your Antarctica adventure begins in earnest
Today you have an early flight to Ushuaia. You might catch bird's-eye views of the fjords and glaciers of Tierra del Fuego and Alberto de Agostini National Park on our descent.
In Ushuaia's bustling port, you'll board MS Fridtjof Nansen, your hybrid-powered expedition ship, specially designed for comfortable, sustainable cruising in polar waters.
Get settled in before being introduced to the Expedition Team and crew members. Then enjoy a delicious welcome dinner, discover your ship, and maybe meet some of your fellow explorers in the Explorer Lounge.
Drake Passage Crossing
Day 3–4
Drake Passage Crossing
Prepare for your Antarctic adventure
Before you reach Antarctica, you must first experience the legendary Drake 'rite of' Passage, a two-day crossing where sea conditions can vary dramatically. It's much smoother sailing these days than in Sir Francis Drake's time!
Your Expedition Team will deliver lectures on Antarctic history, wildlife and ecosystems. And they’ll share the important measures we'll be taking to protect this fragile environment when visiting. You can also sign up for one of our Citizen Science programs. Take this time to enjoy all the comforts you’ll find on board. Take a swim in the infinity pool, indulge in fine dining, or pamper yourself in the Wellness Centre.
Antarctica: another world
Day 5–15
Antarctica: another world
Experience Antarctica in all its natural majesty
You'll spend 11 incredible days exploring Antarctica. Nothing can really prepare you for it. Marvel at the sculpted icebergs, some the size of cathedrals, surrounded by frozen mountains and looming glaciers.
Learn about the wildlife and ecology of Antarctica as you come face-to-face with huge colonies of penguins, leopard seals and more. Bird enthusiasts should look skywards to spot some of the 45 species of Antarctic seabirds that live here, such as skuas, jaegers, petrels and terns.
Here, nature is king and we are mere observers. Our experienced captain will continually monitor conditions to create the best possible itinerary. You'll get multiple chances to go ashore and to cruise with our small expedition boats, under the guidance of our experienced Expedition Team. If weather permits, you can kayak, hike or snowshoe on optional activities. If conditions allow, we'll cross the 66°33' South Polar Circle and sail further on to Marguerite Bay. Here, whales frequent the waters, and the icy islands are havens for Adélie penguins. Only accessible in the late summer season, and iced over most of the year, this is a truly special experience.
Back on board, join Citizen Science projects and onboard lectures, where you'll learn more about polar exploration, this precious habitat, and how we can all protect it.
Sailing towards Ushuaia
Day 16–17
Sailing towards Ushuaia
Relax and learn as we cruise to Ushuaia
After ten incomparable days, we sail back across the Drake Passage towards warmer weather in Argentina, giving you two days to enjoy life onboard. There’s plenty of things to do.
Take part in art workshops or learn how to tie sailor knots. Stay active in the gym or warm up in the panoramic sauna. Relax in the outdoor pool or hot tubs. Watch for birds and other wildlife from deck. Or sort through your camera’s memory cards and get editing tips from our onboard photographer.
Share your experiences with fellow explorers and the Expedition Team. Visit the Science Center and find out more about the things you've seen and log your Citizen Science observations.
Onwards to Buenos Aires
Day 18
Onwards to Buenos Aires
Enjoy an expedition finale in Buenos Aires
Your Antarctic expedition cruise ends in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina’s southernmost province. From the port, you'll be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Buenos Aires, but it doesn’t have to be the end of your adventure.
Why not extend your trip and join our popular Post-Program on a tour of the spectacular Iguazu Falls—an amazing way to wrap up your trip. Or you can stay on in vibrant Buenos Aires, enjoying the city sights, cosmopolitan culture and tango shows before going home.
