Before you visit the Igloo Hotel, find out all about Alta, known as The Northern Lights City

How it works

Every winter, a team of local artists builds the Igloo Hotel on the banks of the Alta River, 12.5 miles (20 km) from Alta town center. After your local guide introduces daily life in Alta—often described as one of the northernmost cities in the world—you’ll take a bus up the Alta Valley to Sorrisniva, home to this remarkable feat of Arctic ice architecture.

The Igloo Hotel spans approximately 21,500 square feet (2,000 m²) and features 30 bedrooms, suites, a bar, and several lounges. Everything is made entirely from snow and ice—even the beds. The hotel’s theme changes each year, and the intricate ice sculptures throughout are as impressive as the structure itself.

Before you leave, browse the small souvenir shop and enjoy a complimentary drink at the ice bar—served, of course, in a glass made of ice.
