How it works

Traveling by bus through the charming coastal town of Brønnøysund, you’ll head to the base of Torghatten Mountain. Famous for its distinctive hole piercing the center, this is one of the most iconic landmarks along the Norwegian coast. According to local legend, the mountain was once the hat of a troll king who used it to block an arrow aimed at a young maiden.

The hike takes around 30 minutes along a gently ascending natural trail to reach the opening of the hole. The path is well-marked and features sturdy Sherpa-built stone steps, created as part of Norway’s National Tourist Routes initiative. The hole itself rises 115 feet (35 m) high and extends 525 feet (160 m) through the mountain, ranging from 49 to 66 feet (15–20 m) wide—large enough for one of our ships to pass through.

At the top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of the Helgeland Coast below. After retracing your steps down the mountain, you’ll finish your excursion with a warm drink and a light snack.
