From Bodø, you'll board a sturdy RIB with an experienced captain at the helm and head out to witness Saltstraumen, the world’s strongest tidal current—a natural wonder that has inspired local artists and writers for centuries.
Four times a day, 400 million cubic meters of water are forced through a narrow passage just 492 feet wide (150 m) and 102 feet deep (31 m). At peak flow, powerful whirlpools measuring up to 33 feet across (10 m) can form.
During the ride, there’s a good chance of spotting Sea Eagles and other Arctic wildlife. You may also notice distinctive patterns in the exposed rock faces, created by immense geological forces during a process known as Caledonian folding more than 250 million years ago.
