How it works

Your guide will be waiting as you step off the ship. Dressed in traditional Viking attire, they’ll accompany you to the Norveg Coastal Museum, where you'll board a boat for the 15-minute journey to Nærøya Island.

Named after Njord, the Norse god of the sea, Nærøya was a place of power long before Christianity arrived in Norway. From the 12th through the 17th centuries, it served as the religious, political, and administrative center of Ytre Namdal, with the medieval Nærøykirka church at its heart.

On this unique excursion, you'll visit a privately owned island where a local family farms the land alongside their sheep and dogs, beneath the shadow of the historic church and its centuries of stories and legends.

You'll enjoy a guided tour of the church, uncovering traces of the people who built and worshipped there. You'll also take a short walk to the island’s baptismal spring, another site steeped in local folklore, mythology, and history.
