Excursions
To avoid disappointment, we highly recommend pre-booking your excursions online to secure your spot, as places are limited. You can reserve these adventures up until the day before your departure.
Any remaining excursion slots will be available for purchase on board and charged in Norwegian kroner (NOK) at the ship’s exchange rate.
Go to our Excursions hub and select your voyage to view the available options. Click “Add” on the ones you’re interested in, then choose “Request to book” and enter your booking reference and passenger details.
Once submitted, our Customer Service Team will confirm your request and add the excursions to your invoice. Please note that you will not receive an email if your request is not possible – your excursion is only booked once you have received confirmation from us.
Alternatively, you can call or email our Customer Service Team and they can handle the booking process for you.
Visit our Excursions hub and select your voyage to view the available options.
If you booked through a travel agent, you can reach out to them for this information.
No – the price is the same whether you pre-book before your departure or while on board.
Note that all excursion places sold on board are charged in Norwegian kroner (NOK) at the ship’s exchange rate, which does fluctuate.
Excursions are usually available to book up to 18 months before your departure.
Please note that not all excursions may be released at the same time. Some are added later, and we’ll send you an email with full details once bookings open.
Excursions can be cancelled up to 14 days before your departure without charge. Any cancellations made after this time are non-refundable.
It is also possible to change on to another excursion up to 14 days before your departure, but only if the price of that excursion exceeds that of your original booking.
Each of our excursions has a rating to illustrate the level of fitness required. There are four categories, with 1 being the easiest and 4 the most difficult.
Level 1 = Easy: suitable for most. Physically undemanding and suitable for most people.
Level 2 = Moderate: some mobility needed. Involve a small amount of physical activity, but on easy terrain with few major challenges.
Level 3 = Active: good mobility needed. More active and involve outdoor pursuits that require a decent level of fitness. You may be expected to carry your own backpack and equipment.
Level 4 = Challenging: good mobility and fitness needed. Our most challenging excursions with a good level of fitness required. They may involve hiking or biking on uneven terrain and may also require specialist equipment. You would be expected to carry your own backpack and equipment.
All our excursions are conducted in English.
We always do our best to follow the planned itinerary, but the weather along the Norwegian coast can be unpredictable. On occasion, excursions may be cancelled due to weather conditions or low participation.
If this happens:
If you booked in advance: You’ll receive an automatic refund after your trip, usually within 3 weeks of your return.
If you booked on board: You won’t be charged.
Some of our Level 1 excursions are gentle and may suit guests who can walk short distances and step onto a bus independently.
We don’t offer excursions specifically designed for wheelchair users, and unfortunately we can’t guarantee buses with wheelchair ramps. Guests need to be able to board the bus on their own, as our guides and drivers aren’t able to assist with lifting.
If you use a wheelchair or have limited mobility, we recommend waiting until you’re on board to book excursions. That way, our Expedition Team can talk things through with you and help find the best possible option for your journey.
Yes, if you're sailing on The Coastal Express it is possible to do several excursions on one day. In Lofoten, for example, you could join a bus tour of Harstad in the morning, enjoy lunch on board the ship, and then embark on a Sea Eagle safari in the afternoon. You can find more details on which trips are combinable on each excursion page.
If you are travelling on a Signature sailing, it is only possible to do one excursion per day.
Not always. On The Coastal Express, we offer several overland excursions that start in one port and end in another. Transport is included in these to ensure you are escorted back to the ship on time.
If an excursion overlaps with mealtimes, we’ll either adjust dining times for you or make alternative arrangements. Some excursions also include food or refreshments.
Yes, 1893 Ambassadors get a 5% discount on all excursions (booked pre-travel or on board). Click here to sign up for free.
Yes, you can use your onboard credit to book excursions. Simply speak to the Expedition Team when on board and they can organise this for you, as onboard credit can only be used when you are on the ship.
Yes. We offer mixed excursion packages on selected voyages, where you can save on a selection of our most popular excursions and enjoy some onboard credit. Click here for more information.
Yes. If you book an excursion with us, the ship will wait for your return or we will make arrangements to get you back on board at the next port. You won’t be left behind.
Prices can vary depending on the season you travel. Costs such as exchange rates and local prices may change from year to year, so we show a “starting from” price as a guide. The exact price will be confirmed when you book.
If you’ve requested excursions to be added to your booking online, please note that this process is handled manually. We carefully review each request to ensure the excursions are compatible with your itinerary and do not overlap. Once confirmed, you will receive an updated invoice or confirmation. This typically takes up to two business days.
