Fjords, Northern Lights, Midnight Sun and a skiing world championship in the Arctic: plan your Norwegian cruise in 2029 with Hurtigruten.

See the fjords under the endless glow of the Midnight Sun. Sail under the dancing colours of the Northern Lights. Witness world champions fly down the slopes or even try skiing for yourself. Norway in 2029 has something for all types of travellers. Whether you want to see the skerries and islands of our expansive coastline or fancy exploring the famous Western Fjords region, there’s a Norway cruise to suit everyone. Whatever you choose, Norway is the place to tick off bucket-list experiences, like chasing the Northern Lights or going whale watching in the Arctic. Even simply sailing on Hurtigruten's iconic Coastal Express awards you something special: you'll have travelled along our heritage route that began in 1893.
From snowcapped mountains to fjords bathed in soft autumn light, the long nights of summer to delicate spring blooms, we sail up and down the Norwegian coastline in all seasons. Choose from short trips or longer voyages, with departures from Bergen, Tromsø and more, and plan your ultimate Norway cruise for 2029.

In February 2029, Norway hosts the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships for the first time. This is the second-largest winter sports event in the world, after the Winter Olympics. Narvik, a key port city above the Arctic Circle in northern Norway, has the honour of hosting this adrenaline-fuelled event. The ski slopes sit high above the city with incredible views over the fjord and out to sea.
You can visit Narvik on The North Cape Line from Hamburg in winter, the northbound Arctic Line voyage, and The Arctic Circle Explorer. As part of our Signature voyages, these port stops are all over 5 hours long, giving you plenty of time to explore Narvik and soak up the atmosphere of the competition or even try skiing for yourself at Narvikfjellet Ski Resort.

Astro-tourism, travelling to destinations in search of amazing dark skies and other celestial wonders, is on the rise. And Norway is a top spot for astro-tourism. Alongside excellent opportunities for a Northern Lights cruise in 2029, we have a low population density (around 15 people per square kilometre) and plenty of green spaces with low light pollution.
In 2029, notable celestial events include: the Perseid meteor shower (12-13 August), the Geminid meteor shower (13-14 December) and the total lunar eclipse (20 December). The latter two will occur during Norway's Polar Night season, where the sun never fully rises in much of northern Norway, providing optimum conditions for spotting meteors or a blood-red moon against the night sky.

From a renowned photography museum to an innovative centre dedicated to whales, over the next few years there will be a flurry of new additions to Norway's cultural scene. In 2027, Oslo welcomes a newly refurbished Museum of the Viking Age, which hosts an extensive collection of objects from the era, including the best-preserved Viking ships in the world. And in Vesterålen, a new landmark centre (The Whale) combining art and science to honour whales opens its doors.
In 2028, Fotografiska opens a new site in Oslo. Learn about photography, art and culture at this cutting-edge photography museum housed in the historic Deichman building, formerly the main library.
Sail closer to the coast on our small ships built for these waters, with voyages in every region and season, whether you’re looking for a Norwegian fjords cruise in 2029, a Northern Lights cruise or to just experience the wonders of Norway’s coast.

Known as the Northern Lights Capital, Alta is one of Norway’s leading destinations for stargazing. Situated beneath the Auroral Oval, with long, dark winters, the city has a long connection with astronomy and aurora research. In 1899, the world’s first permanent Northern Lights observatory was established just outside Alta, helping to cement its reputation as a great destination for a Northern Lights cruise in 2029.
Visit in winter on The Arctic Line (northbound and southbound) or The Arctic Circle Explorer voyages for Northern Lights, UNESCO-listed rock art, Sámi culture and unforgettable winter adventures, such as snowmobiling and dog sledding.

Set between soaring mountains and the deep waters of the Ofotfjorden, Narvik combines Arctic scenery with a fascinating wartime history and easy access to outdoor adventures. Ride the Narvikfjellet gondola for panoramic views across the fjord, learn about Narvik’s role in World War II, or visit during the ski season for winter adventures.
Narvik will also be hosting the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 2029, bringing world-class skiers from around the globe. Visit Narvik on several of our Signature voyages – the northbound Arctic Line and The Arctic Circle Explorer – all giving you over 5 hours of time in port.

Founded by Viking King Olav Tryggvason in 997, Trondheim blends centuries of history with a vibrant modern culture. Once Norway’s Viking capital, the city is home to the striking Nidaros Cathedral, the northernmost medieval Gothic cathedral in the world and one of Scandinavia’s most important pilgrimage sites.
Visit Trondheim for up to 3 hours on The Coastal Express. Plenty of time to wander colourful Bakklandet, with its wooden houses, cafés and cobbled streets, or visit one of the city's many charming bakeries or restaurants.
Small ships that sail places others can’t, in every season, bringing you closer to what matters.

2027 brings two new museum openings in Norway, one exploring Viking history and the other whales. It also marks the end of the Solar Maximum period, where Northern Lights viewing is improved.
