Explore the world's northernmost town and its dramatic surrounding tundra on this guided e-bike tour, with a fascinating mix of old mine workings, research stations and striking Arctic scenery.

Highlights

Discover the highlights of Longyearbyen on an electric bike

Scout for local birds and other wildlife

Learn more about the area’s rich industrial heritage as you pedal across its network of mining roads

How it works

The tour begins in Longyearbyen, where you’ll learn more about the settlement’s history and unique character. After a safety briefing, you'll start your e-bike adventure. Thanks to their electric motors, the bikes are more powerful and easier to use than regular bicycles, making them ideal for exploring the area's unsealed roads.

You’ll first head towards Burmaveien, home to an abandoned coal cableway, and onwards to Vestpynten. This wild area is dotted with pristine lakes that serve as a seasonal haven for countless seabirds and waterfowl. Remarkably, even at a latitude of 78 degrees north, the birdlife and flora here are nothing short of extraordinary, especially between late May and early August.

You’ll then head east into the Advent Valley, where you can see glimpses of the Longyearbyen’s raison d’être – mining. The roads here were mostly constructed for the mining industry, and the occasional passage of colossal coal-laden trucks creates a striking contrast against the serene Arctic backdrop, echoing the history of Svalbard and Longyearbyen’s industrial heritage.
