The history of Hurtigruten

For the generations of local Norwegians who live and work on the Norwegian coast, the words ‘hurtig ruten’ are as common as ‘fjord’, ‘fjell’, and ‘fisk’. Our ships are as part of Norwegian life as the fjords and mountains.

Astrid Nässlander and Halvar Ellingsen are two top-tier Head Chefs from the Norwegian coast, bringing their specialist knowledge of local ingredients and their own culinary flair to our menus.

The Cheesemakers Between Lofoten’s Peaks

Aalan Farm is one of the few goat farms in Nordland county, in the Arctic. Here, owners Tove and Knut Åland have developed a thriving eco-farm that celebrates artisanal produce.

In recognition of how our voyages are authentically Norwegian, we have been awarded the official Made in Norway certification from the Norwegian government.

The Norwegian coast is our home. It has provided for and nurtured us and our families for generations. We want to do everything we can to keep it a place of beauty and wonder.

Sea Zero

Channelling the same pioneering spirit as our first voyage in 1893, we are embarking on a journey to build our first ship with zero-emission propulsion for The Coastal Express by 2030. It is the most ambitious sustainability initiative in our 130-year history.

An energy-efficient ship

Together with a consortium of 12 maritime partners and research institute SINTEF, we are proud to present concept designs of our first ship with zero-emission operations that we hope will sail on the Norwegian coast in 2030.

How we said goodbye to single-use plastics

In summer 2018, we were the first cruiseline to remove single-use plastics from all our ships and offices. Our own Helga Bårdsdatter Kristiansen was the driving force behind the initiative.
