Travel the length of Norway with Lorraine Kelly in this three-part Channel 4 documentary, supported by Hurtigruten.

In the series, broadcasting legend Lorraine sets out on a journey she’s dreamed of since childhood. Travelling mostly aboard our ships, she traces a route from the deep fjords of the west to the icy waters of the north.

Her goal? To meet the people who call this incredible coast home, to learn about life above the Arctic Circle and to chase the Northern Lights.

Along the way, Lorraine fishes from a 100-year-old boat, shares a fireside meal with a Sámi reindeer herder, drives a dog sled (watch out for that tree...) and finally sees the Northern Lights – a moment she’s waited for since she was five years old.

Whether she’s meeting Arctic chefs or foraging for seaweed in the Arctic surf, Lorraine brings her trademark warmth and curiosity to every encounter.

Highlights from Lorraine Kelly’s Norwegian Odyssey

Across three episodes, Lorraine’s journey captured the rhythm of life on the Norwegian coast as we know it – from the everyday details to the food, legends and light.

The Norwegian way to travel

Lorraine's journey was shaped as much by who she met and how she travelled as where she went.

From spending time on the bridge with the captain to sailing between the sheer granite walls of impossibly narrow Trollfjord, travelling by ship offered a calm, connected way to experience the coast.

On shore, Lorraine embraced friluftsliv with locals in the village of Sæbø, pairing a hillside walk with a traditional sauna, before swapping “The World’s Most Beautiful Voyage” for the “world’s most beautiful swing” over Hjørundfjord.

While her precise route was unique to the series, with Hurtigruten it's easy for you to recreate the spirit of her journey: relaxed and unforced, days shaped by weather and light, and moments of adventure woven throughout.

Flavours of Norway

For Lorraine, food wasn’t just about eating – it was a way into our stories, traditions and relationships. In Trondheim, once Norway’s Viking capital and now one of its most exciting food cities, Lorraine tasted brunost (brown cheese) waffles and went behind the scenes of a restaurant that specialises in local, seasonal and foraged ingredients.

In Vesterålen, she got a memorable goat massage at Arctic chef Halvar Ellingsen’s farm, and shared a fireside meal with Sámi reindeer herder Biret – the sister of our Sámi Culinary Ambassador.

In Lofoten, Lorraine waded into Arctic waters to harvest seaweed by hand, and feasted on her catch after cod fishing aboard the century-old MS Symra.

Even further north, Lorraine’s culinary journey also took in the world’s northernmost distillery, where she tasted whisky aged under the Northern Lights.

Spectacular Norway

The landscapes and wildlife of the Norwegian coast made a lasting impression. Lorraine sailed through vast fjords and open waters, watched whales swimming near the ship, and had a close encounter with a sea eagle. She also tried dogsledding near Tromsø – a fast and exhilarating experience, even without snow.

The journey reached its emotional finale when the green ribbons of the Northern Lights finally danced across the sky overhead, fulfilling a dream Lorraine had carried since childhood.

A land of legends

Threaded through all of this were the myths and legends that give Norway’s landscapes their deeper resonance. Lorraine heard stories of trolls and Viking warriors, learned how each fjord carries its own folklore, and explored how ancient beliefs shaped life as we Norwegians know it today.

At the Polar Museum in Tromsø, Lorraine held a compass once used by the famous Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen on his 1911 South Pole expedition. It was a meaningful moment, connecting past and present.
