Norway has one of the world's longest coastlines, home to a diversity of unique port towns and villages. These fascinating settlements are dotted along the country’s coastline like a string of pearls, each with their own personality and charm. And having sailed this coast since 1893, nobody knows them as well as we do.

For more than 130 years, our world-famous Coastal Express route has been a lifeline for Norwegian coastal communities. From Bergen in the south to Kirkenes in the north, we transport food, medicine, letters, and loved ones to and from 34 ports, connecting the nation together.

And at Hurtigruten, we offer more than just cruises. With our port-to-port journey planner, you can create your own personal itinerary along the Norwegian coast. Whether you want to sail into one of Norway’s iconic fjords, explore an age-old fishing village, or go in search of the Northern Lights, you can choose where you get on and off – with either a one way ticket or a return trip.

Frequently asked questions: Booking a port-to-port journey with Hurtigruten

Need help with your booking? Check out our FAQs below or contact our Customer Service Centre for assistance.

Booking and payment

Our port-to-port page helps you plan your journey. After making your reservation, you will receive a confirmation email with your booking reference - this is all you need to board, as no paper ferry ticket is issued.

You do not need to book a cabin for journeys less than 23 hours, although it is advisable if you are travelling overnight to ensure a comfortable journey.

For journeys longer than 23 hours, it is mandatory to book a cabin. You can do this during the booking process. You can choose the category of your cabin, but not its location on the ship. Note that suites are not available for port-to-port journeys.

We accept the following payment methods for bookings:

  • Visa

  • Mastercard

  • Maestro

  • UnionPay

  • JCB

  • American Express

You can also pay by bank transfer if your booking is made more than 90 days before departure. Unfortunately, we don’t accept payment by cheque.

If booking a ticket on board or at the port, cash is also accepted (Norwegian kroner).

To cancel your trip, please email [email protected]. Cancellation fees apply and vary depending on how close it is to your departure date. See our Terms and Conditions for more information.

Yes, you can travel on Hurtigruten with your pet. To do so, please book your ticket through our Customer Service Centre. Please note that if you need to book a cabin for your journey, there will be an additional fee of 200 NOK per night for pets.

Pets are not permitted to move around the ship, including on the outside decks, and must remain in your cabin or car for the duration of the journey. The exception is service dogs, which require documentation or confirmation from a doctor upon boarding. It is permitted to take your dog (or other pet) off the ship via the car deck in all ports.

For more information on travelling with a pet, see our dedicated FAQs.

Yes, you can bring a bicycle onboard for an additional 250 NOK. Please contact our Customer Service Centre to add one to your booking. Bikes are stored on the car deck during the journey.

Embarking and disembarking

Please ensure you bring a valid passport. If you have booked in advance online, please also have your booking number to hand – although there is no need to print your email confirmation.

Please be ready to drive on board at 18.00 in Bergen and no later than one hour before departure in Trondheim, Bodø, Tromsø and Kirkenes. For all other ports, please arrive no later than 30 minutes before departure.

If boarding in Bergen, the Jekteviksterminalen (open from 11:00) has a seating area and guest lounge where complimentary drinks and snacks are provided after checking in. If you need to store luggage, there are 15 lockers of varying sizes available (card payment only).

At other ports, facilities may be limited and opening hours vary. Most of the larger ones have a waiting room (including Tromsø, Svolvær, Ålesund, Bodø and Stokmarknes), but note that they close overnight.

During your journey, you are free to disembark and explore the ports we visit at your leisure. See our sailing plan for more information. Please ensure that you are back on board in time, as the ship cannot wait for late passengers. If you miss your ship, you will need to arrange transport by yourself and at your own expense to the next port on the schedule.

If the ship arrives later than planned, the stay in port will be shorter to keep to schedule. The ship’s departure time will always be clearly displayed in the gangway as you disembark.

We always do our best to follow the planned itinerary, but the weather along the Norwegian coast can be unpredictable. In cases of very bad weather or thick fog, safety will always come first.

If your voyage is affected, we’ll let you know by text message or email. Should a port of call be cancelled, you may be eligible for a full or partial refund. Simply fill in the refund form.

If you booked through a travel agency, please contact them directly for assistance.

Inclusions and add-ons

No, your ticket does not include food and drink. You can purchase full-board (FB) or half-board (HB) meal packages, as well as à la carte meals, during the booking process or when on board. If you pre-order meals online or through our Customer Service Centre, please check your confirmation documents carefully to ensure they are listed.
