Board the Rauma Railway, named Europe's most scenic rail journey by Lonely Planet, for a round trip through the dramatic landscapes of Romsdalen valley, past towering mountain cliffs, cascading waterfalls and emerald-green rivers.

Highlights

Marvel at dramatic mountain cliffs, waterfalls and Norway’s most-photographed railway bridge

Travel one of Europe’s most scenic rail routes, as recognised by

Lonely Planet

Discover the true story of how some daring Norwegians protected 50 tonnes of gold during WWII

Experience a unique blend of natural beauty and powerful history in the heart of Romsdalen

How it works

Boarding in Åndalsnes, the train heads towards Bjorli past some of the area's most iconic sights. Look out for the towering Troll Wall, the cascading Verma Waterfall and Kylling Bridge – the most-photographed railway bridge in the country. Sheer mountain cliffs and emerald rivers line the way throughout.

The journey also carries a remarkable piece of wartime history. In April 1940, as German forces invaded Norway, this very line was used to secretly transport over 50 tonnes of gold reserves out of Oslo – a daring operation by a group of determined Norwegians who preserved the nation's wealth under extraordinary pressure.

After reaching Bjorli, you can get off and stretch your legs before the return journey back to Åndalsnes.
