Highlights

Explore the area around Kirkenes by quadbike

Get an insight into the history of the area and local mines

Visit the Norwegian border at Skafferhullet

Enjoy the beautiful vista from atop Prestfjellet Mountain

How it works

Your guide will meet you at the quay in Kirkenes for a safety demonstration before you divide into pairs and set off through town on your quadbikes.

Your first stop is a viewpoint overlooking Sydvaranger iron mine, established in the early 20th century. Your guide will give a brief history of the mine, including its capture, destruction and subsequent reconstruction during and after WWII.

You’ll then head to Skafferhullet, the former Norwegian-Russian border crossing point before it closed in 1966. Here, you can take a break and enjoy a hot drink and snack, within view of a few Russian dwellings and a chapel across the border.

The return route takes you up Prestfjellet Mountain for a sweeping panorama over Kirkenes and the surrounding landscape before heading back to the ship.
