Båtsfjord – a wild playground at the top of Norway
A fishing village on the Varanger Peninsula where sea eagles soar, rivers tumble and Arctic traditions run deep.

Båtsfjord has carved its livelihood out of its position tucked into a sheltered harbour in a dramatic fjord. Surrounded by towering cliffs and rich waters, the fishing village is a gateway to the vibrant marine and birdlife of Norway’s far northeast coast.
Båtsfjord: a sanctuary shaped by the sea
Originally a tiny fishing settlement of just a handful of families, in the mid-19th century Båtsfjord grew as nearby Hamningberg’s harbour struggled to stay ice free in winter. Its sheltered waters made it a reliable hub for fishing, attracting settlers from across Norway. By the early 1900s, it had blossomed into a thriving port with fleets bringing in cod, herring and, more recently, king crab.
Today, Båtsfjord remains one of the most important fishing communities in Finnmark, drawing crews from around the world. Over 30 nationalities are represented here – a testament to the industry’s continued pull.
Beyond fishing, the nearby Syltefjordstauran cliffs and surrounding coastlines are a haven for arctic seabirds, while whales and seals swim through its waters. Inland, hikers follow quiet trails to waterfalls and salmon rivers. And from September to April, the skies come alive with the Northern Lights, while summer brings the Midnight Sun.
