How to make the most of Norway at Christmas

Snow-dusted mountains and markets. Crisp air that clouds from your mouth. Twinkling lights along the shoreline. And if you’re lucky, a festive display from the Northern Lights. The Norwegian coast puts on an unforgettable show for the most wonderful time of the year.

From dog sledding through the snowy landscape to wandering through the world’s biggest gingerbread town, we’ve rounded up 9 magical ways to experience Christmas in Norway

Get into the Christmas spirit

Why choose a Christmas cruise in Norway?

Throughout December, our ships glow with festive decorations. Baubles sparkle, a tall Christmas tree stands proud, and the sound of carols drifts through the air. It’s all about julestemning – that unmistakable Christmas spirit that wraps itself around you as soon as you step on board.

As you sail the coast, you’ll be part of Norwegian traditions both big and small. Join your Expedition Team as they share stories of local customs and life along the shoreline. On Christmas Eve, sit down to a steaming bowl of julegrøt, the creamy rice porridge we Norwegians have enjoyed for generations. In keeping with Norwegian tradition, we’ve hidden an almond inside – and whoever finds it gets a gift.

Feel festive on shore

The Norwegian coast celebrates Christmas in its own unique ways, and you’ll feel the warmth of it in every port.

White Christmas in the area of the UNESCO listed Bryggen in Bergen, Norway.

Bergen

Bergen is at its best for Christmas. Browse its charming Christmas market, visit the world's biggest gingerbread city, and admire Bryggen covered in strings of lights. Don’t miss the Christmas House, which fills two entire floors with Christmas decorations.

Arctic Cathedral and Tromso Bridge

Tromsø

Deep within the Arctic Circle, Tromsø glitters at Christmastime – often beneath the magical Northern Lights. The main street dazzles with fairy lights, handcrafted goods are piled high in the Christmas market, but the Christmas tree at Stortorget is the centre of the festivities.

Svolvær is the largest settlement in the Lofoten Islands

Lofoten

In this archipelago, Christmas is full of traditions with Christmas streets, cosy Christmas markets, and concerts. Thanks to the Polar Night, there’s a wonderful atmosphere all day long. Go Christmas shopping, listen to Christmas concerts, or simply stroll between the quayside and the mountains.

Seasonal excursions

Dial up the julesteming (festive spirit) by booking a seasonal excursion. What could be more Christmassy than a magical wintertime activity such as dogsledding, meeting reindeer, immersing yourself in the traditions of towns and villages ablaze with Christmas lights, or visiting a snow hotel? Here are a few excursions to get you in the spirit.
