How it works

Voted Europe's most scenic train journey by Lonely Planet, the Rauma Railway winds through a landscape of vertical mountain walls, emerald rivers and iconic Norwegian landmarks – including Trollveggen, Europe's highest perpendicular mountain wall, and Kyllingbrua, the country's most-photographed railway bridge. The train slows at each landmark, giving you time to take it all in.

Along the way, your guide shares tales of ancient trolls, rockfalls and waterfalls – and the dramatic story of how this very railway rescued Norway's entire 50-tonne gold reserve in April 1940.

For this tour, the group splits in two: one half travels by train while the other takes a guided bus tour along a similar route, with a photo stop at Trollveggen. Both groups meet at Bjorli – a beautiful mountain village – for a short break before swapping: train passengers return by bus, and bus passengers return by train.
