Step into Denmark’s oldest town on a guided stroll through cobbled lanes, where Viking-age trading history meets a well-preserved medieval streetscape.
As you arrive in Ribe after a comfortable 35-minute private coach ride across the open, flat landscape, the pace shifts. This is a town that has been welcoming travellers for centuries, and you’ll feel it straight away as you walk along narrow cobbled streets framed by characterful half-timbered houses.
Ribe’s story begins around 700 AD, when a large market square drew traders from near and far, helping the town prosper into the historic centre you’ll explore today. On this guided walking tour, you’ll soak up an atmosphere shaped by generations of traders and craftspeople.
You’ll pass Skibbroen, the town’s former harbour area, and see the Flood Column, which records some of the worst catastrophes in Ribe’s history. Your walk also includes a visit to Ribe Cathedral, which began taking shape around 1150, with construction completed around a century later.
Afterwards, rejoin the coach for the return drive to Esbjerg, having wandered through a living piece of old Denmark.
Excursion is subject to a minimum number of participants.

Walk Esbjerg’s unusual grid-plan streets with a local guide

Approximate time: 09:00 - 11:00

Join a guided walking tour of Esbjerg – one of Denmark’s youngest cities, born of war and shaped by the North Sea.
Starting from the pier, your local guide leads you into a town with an unusually modern feel. You’ll soon notice one of Esbjerg’s most striking features: unlike most Danish cities, its centre follows an American-style grid, with streets meeting at right angles – a clue to how quickly the place took shape.
Esbjerg was established in 1868, after Denmark’s 1864 war loss left the country without Altona, its key North Sea harbour. From just a handful of farms, the town grew rapidly, reaching a population of more than 13,000 by 1901. Over the next century, Esbjerg became Denmark’s largest fishing port, a major shipping centre and a key base for North Sea oil and gas. Today, the port is Denmark’s fifth-largest city, known internationally for offshore wind technology.
You’ll spot the ambition of those early growth years in the Italian- and German-inspired architecture, adding even more character to the streetscape. One of the most story-rich buildings is the old courthouse and jail, which harbours all sorts of historical surprises. Your guide will spill its secrets and more tales from Esbjerg’s maritime past as you trace Esbjerg’s story of reinvention.
Excursion is subject to a minimum number of participants.

As we stroll among the cobbled streets, our guide will tell us more about Stavanger’s industrial history.

Next, we’ll explore Fargegaten (colourful street), a pedestrianised stretch of pastel-hued shops, restaurants, and local businesses that make up one of Stavanger’s most photographed spots.

Get ready to journey through 3,000 years of history! During our 20-minute bus ride to Avaldsnes, our guide will tell us about the area’s fascinating and mighty past.
We’ll cross the bridge over Karmsundet, the narrow strait that gave Norway its name: it was once known as Nordvegen, ‘the way to the north’. Viking kings ruling here forced ships to sail this shipping route, becoming rich and powerful in the process.
We’ll tour Nordvegen History Centre where we hear the enthralling story of how Avaldsnes became Norway’s oldest royal seat. Enter a world of kings, sagas, poems, and a magic that was once as real to people as the physical world is to us today.
Next, we’ll enjoy a guided tour of beautiful Olavskirken and see the archaeological excavations of the royal estate. Built by King Håkon Håkonsen in the 13th century, the church is the largest cultural monument at Avaldsnes.
Excursion is subject to a minimum number of participants.
Both MS Finnmarken and MS Midnatsol sail this route, and your ship depends on your departure date. Life on board both is relaxed and informal. You can expect comfortable cabins, panoramic lounges with large windows, a choice of restaurants, and plenty of quiet corners to take in the views.
Both routes sail between Hamburg and Norway’s North Cape region, but the experience differs depending on the season.
Summer (May–September): Longer days and the Midnight Sun mean more time in port and opportunities to enjoy Norway’s fjords and islands in full daylight. The summer itinerary includes scenic cruising through the Lysefjord and the inner coastal route, plus visits to the Lofoten Island, Træna and Sæbø. An ideal choice if you want endless light, green landscapes and birdlife.
Winter (September–April): Shorter days bring long nights, with a good chance to see the Northern Lights. The winter itinerary includes extended stays in Tromsø, Honningsvåg and Alta, with scenic cruising along the inner coastal route and stops at Åndalsnes and Narvik. Choose this voyage if you want Arctic winter landscapes, cultural experiences, and our Northern Lights Promise.
