Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between this tour and a Hurtigruten cruise-only voyage?
The Astronomy Cruise is a themed version of our North Cape Line voyage, sailing from Oslo to Honningsvåg and back. It follows the same route and includes all the highlights, but with an added astronomy programme led by an expert astronomer.
You’ll attend talks and lectures, and enjoy exclusive excursions in Tromsø and Alta. If you want to deepen your understanding of the Northern Lights and the night sky, this is the voyage for you.
Is this a guided tour?
This cruise includes a dedicated Tour Manager and a professional astronomer who accompany you throughout. However, it’s not a guided land tour – shore excursions along the coast remain optional (and at an additional cost) and are led by local guides.
Who is the expert astronomer?
Tom Kerss will be the lecturer onboard this sailing. Tom is an astronomer, astrophotographer, author and consultant, as well as our Chief Aurora Chaser.
What meals are included?
The North Cape Line is an all-inclusive cruise. Breakfast, lunch, an afternoon snack and dinner are included, as well as unlimited selected beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks.
What level of accommodation is included?
You can choose your cabin category when you book. We offer four types of cabin categories, ranging from cosy inside cabins to spacious suites with sea views.
Are flights and airport transfers included?
Flights and airport transfers are not included. You'll need to arrange your own travel to and from Oslo, where the voyage begins and ends. Alternatively, you can choose to add an arrival or departure package during the booking process, and we'll take care of everything for you.
What excursions are included?
This voyage includes guided excursions in Tromsø and Alta on days 7 and 9. In Tromsø you will visit the Arctic University Museum of Norway and the Planetarium. In Alta you will visit a site in Bossekop and the Northern Lights Cathedral.
There will also be eight onboard lectures and two masterclasses, one on photography and one on aurora forecasting, led by your astronomy expert. Other optional shore excursions can be booked at an additional cost.
