Made in Norway
In recognition of how our voyages are authentically Norwegian, we have been awarded the official Made in Norway certification from the Norwegian government.
The official origin label of Norway
Made in Norway is only granted to Norwegian products, services, and companies that truly care about taking responsibility for the people, society, and environment of Norway.
Established by the Norwegian government, the ‘Made in Norway’ certification is tied to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the EU’s environmental objectives.
Proudly Norwegian
There are three main areas needed to win the ‘Made in Norway’ label. Here’s how we met all three:
Origin
We provide high-quality services and products in our voyages that are truly Norwegian in origin
Sustainability
We work towards a more sustainable low-emission future, reducing risks to people, society, and the environment
Responsibility
We uphold strong ethical guidelines that look after our employees and the communities we serve in Norway
We are incredibly proud to be part of the ‘Made in Norway’ initiative. This project not only showcases the exceptional quality of Norwegian products but also underscores our commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Protecting what we love
The Norwegian coast is our home. It has provided for and nurtured us and our families for generations. We want to do everything we can to keep it a place of beauty and wonder.
To do that, efforts like our Towards Zero Food Waste scheme and our Sea Zero project to create our first emission-free ship by 2030 are just the beginning.
Homegrown Norwegian food and drink
Wherever possible, we choose local Norwegian businesses to supply our food and drink, helping to build a country-wide network of strong, high-quality local businesses.
Over 80% of the in-season food and 60% of the drinks you’ll find on our menus come from 80 local suppliers from all over Norway, delivered directly to our ships at the ports we sail to.
Supporting Norwegian livelihoods
Each of our ships provides jobs for a team of mechanics, receptionists, waiters, and more – all paid a fair Norwegian salary that feeds families all along the coast. Likewise, we make sure to partner with local Norwegian businesses, such as excursion operators.
As a household name, we are also one of Norway’s largest maritime apprenticeship organisations, training the nation’s next generation of sailors, ship chefs, and engineers.
Quality not quantity
Did you know that a Hurtigruten ship with fewer than 500 guests creates the same employment effects as a large cruise ship with 1,750 passengers?
This means that as one of our guests, you have as much as 3.5 times more positive economic impact for the local people and communities than a tourist on a large non-Norwegian cruise ship.
Of Norway, for Norway since 1893
Not only are we made in Norway, we played an important part in helping to make Norway, too.
Our roots go all the way back to 1893, when our pioneering Norwegian founder Captain Richard With established The Coastal Express. This was Norway’s first fast, reliable voyage that connected southern and northern Norway, bringing the nation together.
