Step aboard one of our purpose-built Signature ships and you'll be met by a host of friendly faces. One team in particular will always be on hand to help you get the most out of your voyage.
Our Expedition Team members are your guides to Norway's coast. They’ll welcome you as an honoured guest, sharing the hidden fjords they love, the stories of everyday coastal life, and the natural wonders that have inspired generations. Many members of the team come from the very coastal communities we visit. For some, working on Hurtigruten has been a lifelong ambition, shaped by growing up along this coast.
From scientists and lawyers to tour guides and adventurers, our Expedition Team come from all walks of life, but are united in their passion for Norway. Their knowledge, warmth and pride in Norway are what make our voyages feel so personal – and why travellers have trusted us since 1893.
What the Expedition Team does
Local, lifelong knowledge
Many of our Expedition Team members across all our ships grew up along the Norwegian coast. So often the stories and insights they share about Norwegian nature, history and culture come from real life experience and heritage passed down over generations.
A team of specialists
From Expedition Leaders to our Nature & Culture Guides, you'll discover that many of our team members have an interest in a variety of fields, from geology and marine biology to the legends and myths of Norway. Ask away, they love to share their knowledge!
Daily talks and lectures
On every Hurtigruten ship, expect fascinating talks and lectures on Norwegian nature, wildlife, history and culture. Our Signature voyages carry six Expedition Team members – twice as many as on our Original voyages – meaning more talks and more support, on ship or on land.
Leading you ashore
Our expert team leads selected excursions, shore landings and guided hikes, telling you facts and stories about Norway along the way. Wherever you go, they are on hand for all sorts of advice: from showing you the best viewpoints to the best places for trying kanelboller (Norwegian cinnamon buns).

If you're joining us on a Signature voyage, you'll sail on either MS Trollfjord or MS Midnatsol, depending on your departure date.

Our Expedition Team: FAQs
How many Expedition Team members are on board?
On each of our Signature ships there is a 6-person Expedition Team. The team is made up of a leader, an assistant leader, a photographer and several other guide positions.
What does the Expedition Team do on a Hurtigruten voyage?
The Expedition Team are your go-to members of the ship's crew for experiences and activities. If you want to book excursions, plan your shore visits or learn something about Norway, head to the Expedition Team desk in the main concourse.
Does the Expedition Team give lectures or talks?
Yes! Every day, different members of the Expedition Team will give talks and lectures of a variety of topics, including Norwegian history and culture, nature, wildlife, geology and more. Each talk usually relates to the section of the coast you're sailing past that day, or the city or region you're docking in.
What's the difference between the Signature and Original Expedition Teams?
On Signature voyages, the team is made up of six members while on Original voyages, it's a team of three (except on our smallest ship MS Vesterålen, which has two). But whichever type of voyage you choose, the Expedition Team has the same purpose: to help you get the most out of your trip.
