How it works

On a winter's night in 1904, a devastating fire left 10,000 people homeless and razed the centre of Ålesund to the ground. Within three years, the entire town had been rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style – and the result is one of Norway's most distinctive and beautiful urban landscapes.

This walking tour takes you close to the spires, turrets and ornamental facades that line the pedestrian streets, bringing the story of that remarkable reconstruction to life.

You'll finish at Brosundet harbour, where fishermen still sell their catch directly from their boats – a living reminder of the maritime traditions that have shaped this town for centuries.
