Formed thousands of years ago, Torghatten Mountain is the cornerstone of Norwegian mythology

Travelling by bus through the attractive town of Brønnøysund, you’ll head to the foot of Torghatten Mountain. With the distinctive hole that pierces its centre, this is one of the Norwegian coast’s most recognisable and iconic spots. According to local legend, the mountain was once the hat of the Troll King who used it to block an arrow aimed at a young maiden.

It takes around 30 minutes to gently amble up the mountain’s rugged natural path to where the hole starts. The is well marked with a solid trail and Sherpa-built stone steps, created as part of the National Tourist Routes initiative. The hole itself is 35 metres high and runs for 160 metres, ranging between 15 and 20 metres wide – big enough for one of our ships to pass through it!

On reaching the hole, you’re rewarded with a fantastic panorama of the Helgeland coast below. Taking the same route back down the mountain, you'll round off the walk with a warming drink and tasty snack.
