How it works

After setting up with your guides, you'll set off from Mehamn over the mountains and through snow-clad valleys halfway to the old trading post and fishing village of towards Kjøllefjord. Along the way, your guides will share stories of local life, the Sámi people, and the remarkable geography of this remote corner of the Arctic.

The season shapes the experience. In winter, experience the snow-clad valleys and the fresh winter air, perhaps under the mesmerising Northern Lights should they occur in the skies above. In spring, you might still see the aurora borealis, and possibly the soft glow of the sun towards the end of your ride, along with a milder climate.

Once you’ve reached the halfway point, it’s a short bus ride down to Kjøllefjord port to rejoin the ship.

Hurtigruten's MS Finnmarken — identifiable by its red hull and illuminated white superstructure — sails through a calm Norwegian fjord at night beneath a spectacular aurora borealis display. Sweeping curtains of green northern lights radiate across a star-filled sky, while snow-covered mountains rise steeply from the water's edge in the background. The ship's warm lights and the aurora reflect in the glassy surface of the fjord below.
