Discover Ålesund from your kayak
Explore the beautiful town and see its Art Nouveau buildings
Learn more about the eventful history of Ålesund
Hear the stories and insights of experienced, local guides
Embarking/disembarking port: Ålesund
Available period: 1 Nov - 31 March
Transportation: Kayak
Clothes: Hiking shoes, warm and windproof clothing. Kayaking clothing is provided
Min. age: 12 years
See the picturesque town of Ålesund from a completely different perspective as you glide along the waterways in a kayak, lead by certified guides with great local knowledge.
Most of Ålesund was destroyed in 1904 when a devastating fire ravaged the town. It was then rebuilt in the fashionable style of the time, Art Nouveau. You’ll see plenty of ornate buildings dotted along the waterside as the guides tell stories about the town’s history.
We’ll meet our guides in the city centre and get kitted out with all the necessary gear. After receiving a safety briefing, we paddle out on the water for an unforgettable tour of the town, stopping off at several points for photo opportunities.
Excursion is subject to a minimum number of participants.
See stunning ocean views from historic Alnes Lighthouse
Travel through subsea tunnels between the islands
Visit Giske and Godøy islands – ancient homes of the Vikings
Get a guided tour of Ålesund
Embarking/disembarking port: Ålesund
Available From: 2 Nov - 31 Mar (Except December 24th–26th, January 1st, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, May 17th, Ascension Day, Pentecost Sunday, and Pentecost Monday.)
Transportation: Bus
Meals: Coffee and cake
Clothes: Hiking shoes, warm and windproof clothing
Discover two of the islands that lie in the sea near Ålesund, driving over soaring bridges and through subsea tunnels as we take in their picturesque beauty and hear about their Viking-linked past.
Our first stop is the island of Giske, birthplace of the Viking chieftain Rollo. In 911 CE, Rollo invaded what came to be called Normandy, and was the great-great-great grandfather of the famed William the Conqueror. We’ll visit the 12th century Giske Church, constructed from white marble for one of Norway’s most powerful families – it’s in a peaceful village location, and we’ll get to see it from the outside, including the graveyard.
We’ll then drive beneath the sea to the island of Godøy, and the pretty fishing village of Alnes. Here, we stop and investigate the charming red and white lighthouse, which was built in 1876 and is a cherished relic of Norwegian culture. Inside the lighthouse, it is something of a museum and you feel as if you are stepping back in time. If the weather allows us to, don’t miss the opportunity to climb the stairs inside and get a fantastic sea view from the top. Pause here for refreshments and cake in the café and take a wander on the nearby beach.
After this, our tour brings us back to Ålesund where we’ll take a look at some of its many charms. This compact and pretty town is famed for its Art Nouveau architecture, and your guide will point out some of its lesser-known points of interest by bus and – for those who want to – on foot. After this we return to the ship.

Enjoy a guided tour and receive a book about the cathedral
Admire the view of the city from Utsikten viewpoint
Embarking/disembarking port: Trondheim
Available period: 03 Sep - 02 Apr, except 24 Dec

Guiding will take place outside the cathedral and in the museum on Sundays and bank holidays due to the church service
Photography is not permitted inside Nidaros Cathedral
Welcome to the original capital of Norway! Founded as early as 997, Trondheim has been marked by a variety of eras. As you explore the city, look out for well-preserved colourful wharves and a 19th century wooden bridge with distinctive red archways in the Bakklandet district. Our guide will tell you more about the city’s history as the bus takes us through Trondheim’s streets and boroughs. We’ll make a short stop at Utsikten to admire the city from above.
A trip to Trondheim wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the impressive Nidaros Cathedral. Built over the burial place of St. Olav, the patron saint of Norway, the construction of this enormous building began back in 1070. After a guided tour around the cathedral, you’ll likely understand why many describe it as the most beautiful religious building in Norway. You’ll receive your own copy of a book about the cathedral to take home as a souvenir.
Excursion is subject to a minimum number of participants.

A lot of effort has been put in to make Trondheim the most bike-friendly city in Norway. The city now has more than 5km of red cycle lanes running through its centre. Today, we’ll join the countless locals that cycle and embark on a relaxing bike tour of Trondheim.
We’ll start from where the ship is docked and cycle along the fjord, before crossing the new bike bridge. This bridge offers some great views of Munkholmen island, Trondheim’s version of Alcatraz. From here, we’ll cycle via the neighbourhood of Ila along the river Nid, where you’ll spot the impressive Nidaros Cathedral.
Entering the buzzy Bakklandet district, we’ll stop for coffee and pastries at one of the many cosy cafés in the area. Heading back to the ship, we’ll cross the historic district and the modernised part of the trendy Solsiden area, a former shipyard which has become very popular with the locals.

View the Saltstraumen tidal current from shore

Embarking/disembarking port: Bodø
Available: 2 Jan-30 Dec, except 24 Dec

There is an automated audio guide available in multiple languages
The strength of the Saltstraumen current depends on the tide and cannot be guaranteed.
Today’s tour begins in the town of Bodø, just north of the Arctic Circle. With around 50,000 inhabitants, this is the second-largest town in Northern Norway. From there, we’ll continue on to Saltstraumen, passing fantastic scenery on the way.
Saltstraumen has existed for about three thousand years and has never failed to amaze its visitors. Here, the water speeds reach up to 20 knots, and up to 400 million cubic meters of seawater forces its way through the 150 metre-wide-strait every six hours.
After you’ve admired the strongest tidal current in the world, you’ll be given a box of salt flakes produced here. It takes 48 hours to separate the unique minerals from the water. Just like snow crystals, salt crystals are unique, shaped by the combination of water temperature, season, and humidity at Saltstraumen. Take the salt back home with you and impress your friends with an Arctic addition to your cooking.
Excursion is subject to a minimum number of participants.

The walk is approximately 3km long
Join us for a guided walk along the Norwegian coast and gain a deeper appreciation for the country’s dependence on the ocean. Experienced guides will take you on pathways along the shore and across sandy beaches, pointing out interesting views or wildlife species along the way. Perhaps you’ll spot an eagle flying over the sea, or even an Arctic fox foraging for food.
Along this coastline, many Viking graves have been discovered over the years. They typically appear as grassy knolls, hiding history and Nordic heritage. Our guides will take you to see one of them., As you walk together, they’ll share their knowledge of the town of Bodø’s history, and of the geology of the coast.

The confluence of warm and cold ocean currents here creates nutrient-rich waters, while the steep cliffs of the islands make great nesting sites. This is a paradise for thousands of birds, and for bird watchers too, so don’t forget to bring your camera and binoculars.
From the boat, we can observe the Finnmark region’s largest flock of puffins, together with large numbers of kittiwakes. During the nesting season this area teems with life as mighty sea eagles hover above in search of prey, while guillemots, razorbills, cormorants, Arctic skuas, northern fulmars, Brünnich’s guillemots, and the large northern gannet fill the air with a cacophony of shrieks and screeches. In the autumn, you can also catch a glimpse of Europe’s smallest seabird, the British storm-petrel.
