Get up close to Svartisen, Norway's second-largest glacier, on this guided bus and boat excursion from Ørnes.

Highlights

Enjoy a guided bus ride in picturesque surroundings

Take a short boat trip across a fjord

Visit the Svartisen Tourist Center

Pass by the world’s most powerful tidal current, Saltstraumen

How it works

From Ørnes, we’ll board a bus for a guided tour to the small village of Holandsvik, passing gorgeous scenery on the way. From here, we’ll take a 10-minute boat ride across the fjord to the Svartisen Tourist Centre, which has prime views of Norway’s second-largest glacier.

At around 370 square kilometres, Svartisen is a remarkable sight. Despite sitting at the lowest elevation of any glacier on the European continent, it sends some 60 tongues of ice reaching into a mountain landscape of peaks over 1,500 metres high.

Warm up afterwards with a hot drink and a spread of homemade cakes at the centre, before rejoining the coastal road back to Bodø. On our way back to the ship, we’ll also pass Saltstraumen, the world's strongest tidal current.

Hurtigruten's MS Finnmarken — identifiable by its red hull and illuminated white superstructure — sails through a calm Norwegian fjord at night beneath a spectacular aurora borealis display. Sweeping curtains of green northern lights radiate across a star-filled sky, while snow-covered mountains rise steeply from the water's edge in the background. The ship's warm lights and the aurora reflect in the glassy surface of the fjord below.
