Hear the remarkable story of how brewing became legal on Svalbard
Taste some locally crafted beer, made with pure glacier water
A guide will meet you at the harbour and lead you on a short walk of around 200 metres to Svalbard Brewery, in the heart of Longyearbyen. Here, you’ll be welcomed by a brewery representative who will introduce you to one of the town’s most fascinating modern success stories.
For decades, brewing alcohol on Svalbard was illegal. That changed in 2014 after years of persistence from the brewery’s founder, a fomer miner and pilot who campaigned hard to overturn the regulation. You’ll hear the story of how this unlikely Arctic brewery came to life, and how determination, creativity and a passion for craft beer made it possible.
Of course, no brewery visit would be complete without tasting the produce. You’ll sample the beers produced here, brewed using exceptionally pure glacier water sourced from Svalbard’s surrounding icefields. It’s one of the few foods actually produced locally.
You return to your ship with a deeper appreciation for life in this remote Arctic settlement.
