How it works

Your walk begins at the harbour, where you’ll set off with your guide towards one of the iconic polar bear warning signs that mark the edge of town. Beyond this point, it’s mandatory to carry protection against polar bears – a reminder of how closely the settlement sits to the Arctic wilderness.

Next, visit Svalbard Church, a striking red building framed by the surrounding Arctic landscape. Dating from 1921, it was the northernmost church in the world until 2017. Spend around 15 minutes soaking up the atmosphere inside and hearing about the church’s role in this close-knit community.

Continuing through Longyearbyen’s town centre, your guide shares stories and insights about the settlement’s past and present. Along the way, you’ll pass colourful buildings, shops and cafés that offer a glimpse into everyday life in this remarkable Arctic town.

Your tour ends outside the Svalbard Museum. From here, you can choose to visit the museum independently (entry not included) or continue exploring Longyearbyen at your own pace.
