The iconic Seven Sisters mountain range looms up as we approach Sandnessjøen.

Dominating the landscape, these ridged peaks appear as immense, rocky waves that have been frozen in time. Sandnessjøen, the small town at their feet, is a gateway to hiking adventures and a hub for those exploring the UNESCO listed Vega Islands.

Sandnessjøen: from yesterday to today

Nestled on the island of Alsta, just west of the breathtaking Seven Sisters mountain range, Sandnessjøen has been a key part of the Helgeland region for hundreds of years. Back in the late 1600s, it earned special trading privileges, helping it grow into a lively hub for commerce and local business. It officially became a town in 1999 and today, around 6,000 people call it home.

Strolling through Sandnessjøen, you'll find a mix of shops, cosy cafés and inviting restaurants. One of the town’s most unusual buildings is Vindenes Hus – a former fisherman's cottage turned tiny white art gallery with stunning views of the Helgeland Bridge and the fjord beyond. Near the town centre, the white wooden parish church built in 1881 showcases the cruciform style. History buffs might enjoy the striking museum dedicated to Petter Dass, a famous 17th-century poet-priest, located approximately 20km south.

As seen from the sea

Sailing between the scattering of low islands towards Sandnessjøen, the iconic peaks of the Syv Søstre with their jagged silhouettes rise up from the turquoise waters.

As you approach you can’t miss the elegant Helgeland Bridge, with its huge triangular-shaped cable ‘sails’ as it stretches across the Leirfjorden from the mainland to Alsta.
