The Truth About Antarctica's Weather

Without a doubt, the number one question we’re asked when travelers are considering an expedition cruise to Antarctica is: But isn’t it too cold??

The short answer? No! Here, we’d like to offer a few secrets about how comfortable it really is to explore the Great White Continent of Antarctica.

What is the best time of year to travel to Antarctica?

For starters, the Antarctic cruise season actually takes place during the Southern Hemisphere’s summer, from late November to early March. We travel at this time of year not just for the warmer temps, but also because it’s the best time of year to traverse the waters and actually cut through the ice. (For more information about which month has more penguin chicks vs which month has more whale sightings, click here.)

What can I expect from the Temperature in Antarctica?

In January, the temperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula can get up to the mid-40s°F and while that may not sound like sunbathing weather, when you’re on deck and the sun is shining (something that happens, we promise), it genuinely starts to feel pretty warm! Not to mention when you’re enjoying a landing on Antarctica, perhaps going for a hike or even a gentle walk, it’s not uncommon to find yourself removing layers as your own temperature rises. And speaking of layers…

How should I pack for an expedition cruise to Antarctica?

Without a doubt, we will always recommend packing and wearing layers. You can remove a sweater when it gets too warm or take off a set of gloves, but if you don’t bring it, you won’t have it.

Plus, we actually gift you a complimentary windbreaker upon arriving on board! You’re able to stay warm while packing layers underneath, and looking cool at the same time–the Antarctic weather will be no match for you when you’ve layered up.

We also recommend you bring sunscreen and sunglasses; it’s easier to catch a sunburn down there than you might think, and it’s always good to be prepared.

How do I stay warm while on the ship?

Certainly, if you err on the colder side, we invite you to enjoy the view from indoors! All of our expedition ships that voyage to Antarctica have panoramic lounges; you can enjoy a hot cup of cocoa or a hot toddy, and gaze out at the majestic scenery without missing a beat.

Plus, these same vessels each have a hot tub and sauna, so you can really soak up the warmth.
