Day 1: Arrive in Lima
You begin your Machu Picchu tour in Lima, Peru's fascinating capital. On arrival, you'll check into your hotel for the night. Then you'll have the rest of the day free to wander round the beautifully preserved historic city centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Get some rest before your trip to Cusco tomorrow.
Day 2: Flight to Cusco and city tour
After breakfast, you'll travel from Lima to Cusco, city of the Incas. You'll be met by your local guide at the airport and taken to your hotel, where you'll enjoy lunch. Then, you'll join a guided tour of the many highlights of this historical city. Visit Sacsayhuaman ceremonial compound, Qenqo Amphitheatre, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay baths. Signs of Incan civilisation are all around. See Santo Domingo church, whose foundations are the ruins of sun temple Koricancha. Your day ends with dinner at your hotel, perhaps accompanied by a refreshing Peruvian pisco sour.
Day 3: Full-day tour to Machu Picchu
From Cusco, your Machu Picchu day trip begins with a narrow-gauge train ride through the dramatic Andean highlands. From Aguas Calientes, you'll take a short bus ride to Machu Picchu. Then enjoy a guided tour of this spectacular Inca stronghold which, since its rediscovery in 1911, has become one of the most famous archeological sites in South America. Look out for another Peruvian icon while you're there – llamas wandering peacefully through the ruins. After lunch at a local restaurant, we’ll return to Cusco by train and bus transfer. Enjoy dinner at your hotel and your second and final night in Cusco.
Day 4: Return to Quito
After breakfast, we'll fly via Lima back to Quito, arriving in the afternoon. You'll have the rest of the day to explore at your leisure. Don't miss Quito's UNESCO-listed Old Town. Dinner at your hotel marks the end of your Pre-Programme and the beginning of your expedition adventure.
