Scapa Flow was a vital natural harbour and home to the British Fleet during the Great War and the Second World War. Enjoy panoramic views across this vast body of water and onwards to the smaller South Isles of Orkney.
Driving over the first of the Churchill Barriers, these man-made causeways now provide a link between some of the isles but were originally commissioned during the Second World War to protect Scapa Flow from enemy invasion.
The Churchill Barriers were built by a large work force – some of which were Italian Prisoners of War who were interned in Orkney. As well as their work on the Churchill Barriers, the Italian POWs also built a tiny chapel. The tour includes a visit to the beautiful, hand-painted Italian Chapel, resourcefully built out of scavenged construction material. The chapel is a memorial to peace but also to the resilience, ingenuity, and skill of the prisoners.
Travel to Highland Park Distillery for the Honour and Pride whisky tour and tasting experience which includes an in-depth private tour of the distillery led by one of Highland Park’s expert senior guides. Experience a taste of 3 award-winning whiskies from the world’s most northerly whisky distillery including the malt of the month.
Return to Kirkwall to visit the beautiful 12th century St. Magnus Cathedral built by the Vikings during their 700-year rule over the islands. Known as the ‘Light of the North’, this grand red and yellow sandstone building dominates the centre of Kirkwall and was built by Earl Rognvald in memory of his uncle St Magnus. Learn more about Rognvald and Magnus whilst exploring the cathedral with your guide.
