Vivi Bolin | Science Coordinator

St Kilda and Science - two passions that go hand in hand, but also only two of the reasons Vivi joined the Hurtigruten Family.

A hero to history and the planet

Born in Finland, Vivi had a love for nature, which sparked her interest in science and desire to understand the world around her. In 2018, she embarked upon a life at sea onboard the Original Coastal Voyage, spending three years on MS Trollfjord (MS Maud’s sister ship). However, driven by a desire to see more of the world, Vivi moved across to Hurtigruten Expeditions as the Science Coordinator on MS Maud.

As the Science Coordinator, it is her role to get our guests excited and enthusiastic about science through onboard lectures, workshops, and citizen science activities. One of her favourite projects is organising the beach cleans we run throughout our cruises. Working in partnership with various local organisations, she leads our guests and crew ashore to leave a clean positive footprint on the places we visit. Another passion is actively encouraging our passengers to participate in the science programme by collecting samples and using the microscope to discover an unseen world.

Before joining Hurtigruten, Vivi spent 6 months as a ranger on the scottish island of St Kilda. Whilst there, she welcomed guests educating them about the history and culture of the St Kildans who lived on the islands until their evacuation in 1930. She also worked tirelessly to ensure the islands and wildlife were protected from invasive species such as rats. It is always a highlight for Vivi when we return to the island as part of the British Isles expedition.

Guest story | Northern Lights

Having spent many years onboard the Original Coastal Express, she has been fortunate to experience many sightings of the Northern Lights. Whilst she still enjoys seeing the lights onboard, one of the highlights of her job is to share this experience with our guests for the first time.

Top tip | Getting involved

As the Science Coordinator, Vivi is often asked if there is a need to come from a scientific background and to this she has a very simple answer - No. The team are there to teach you everything you need to know in an easy and digestible manner, that is both informative as well as fun.

Dream destination | Antarctica

After being a part of the Hurtigruten family for a number of years she has spent many hours listening to her crewmates talk of their adventures to Antarctica and now she wants to experience the magic for herself.
