Get front-row seats to Wrangell’s salmon run, and watch bears and eagles feast on the returning fish.
  • Enjoy the thrill of a jet boat ride and the peaceful atmosphere of the Tongass National Forest.

  • Experience world-class wildlife watching in a place where only 60 visitors are allowed each day.

  • See the returning salmon swimming upstream, and the black and brown bears waiting for them.

  • Possibly catch a glimpse of other forest animals and sea mammals hunting for fish nearby.

Discover the Anan Wildlife Observatory located in the Tongass National Forest of Southeast Alaska, where Black and Brown Bears live in their natural habitat. Enjoy world class wildlife viewing fully escorted by Naturalist Guides.

Your day begins with a scenic jet boat trip to the Observatory Trail Head. Look out for Seals, dolphins and occasional Orca and Humpback whales feeding on Herring, Smelt and Sand Lance in the bays and currents along the way. Your adventure continues as your guide leads you through primeval rainforest around a lagoon to the waterfalls of Anan Creek.  look out for bears catching wild salmon or teaching their young to hunt.  Overhead  you may see eagles soaring in the sky. You may see other forest animals attracted to this rich food source as you walk down the trail and back to your covered and heated jet boat for the short trip back to the pier. There are outhouse facilities at the trailhead and the observatory platform.
