Explore the small Alaskan community of Chignik.
  • Small traditional Alaskan fishing village

  • Local fishing industry including the old cannery buildings, and river where salmon spawns

  • Spot bald eagles and be on the lookout for brown bears in the local region

Perched on the southern coast of the Unalaska Peninsula, Chignik is one of Alaska’s most beautiful small settlements. Venture ashore to explore the village, where the local fishing community will gladly receive you. Chignik’s rivers are home to spawning salmon throughout the summer months, and you may be lucky enough to see the leaping fish making their way upstream.

Our expedition team will meet you at checkpoints around the town to offer insight and guidance about this traditional Alaskan fishing village. Stroll up the roads and pathways past the small post office and learn about the settlement’s fishing pedigree at the local fish processing plant and cannery, the heart of the local industry. View the village’s small airport, a short distance from town which brings in seasonal workers, swelling the population during the summer months when the fishing industry booms, before following the path back to the village.

Keep your eyes on the skies, as Chignik’s sheltered conditions and plentiful fish support an abundant population of Bald Eagles. You should also watch for tracks from the local bear population, which can frequently be seen close to the settlement. Depending on availability, local bear guides may take us out of town into the green valley where you may catch a glimpse of the brown bears that are common in the area.
