Rathlin Island’s population stands at approximately 160 people and the islanders are proud of their culture and traditions, with storytelling, song, music and dance being popular leisure pursuits. The economy of the island is made up of many activities, including farming, tourism and fishing, and although the population is small, the islanders are positive about the future.
Rathlin boasts Northern Ireland's largest seabird colony and panoramic coastal views. Whilst hugely important for breeding seabirds, including puffin, guillemot, kittiwake, razorbill and fulmar. Visitors can enjoy the West Light Seabird Centre and a cliff-top, off-road walking trail at nearby Roonivoolin. At the West Lighthouse, the RSPB staff will introduce you to the busy life of the seabird colony.
Returning to the pier for the next part of your visit, enjoy a guided walking tour along quiet roads around the central part of the island. Different bird species can be expected here and Grey Seals can occasionally be spotted on the shoreline. Your guides will tell you about life on this lovely island, present and past. Please note bird species seen on the day will depend on the season
End your tour with refreshments in the local pub before returning to the ship.
Remarks: It is recommended to wear layered clothing, a windbreaker or rain jacket, and good walking shoes.
