Day 2: Dakar /Embarkation
The next day after breakfast a transfer will connect you to a privately chartered ferry that goes to historic Gorée Island.
Gorée Island is probably the most interesting – if tragic – site in Dakar. From the beginning of the 16th century until the trade was outlawed in 1848, 20 million men, women and children were gathered from the African continent and shipped off to the New World as slaves.
The island of Gorée is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been carefully and faithfully restored. There are no cars or even bicycles on the tiny island and only around a thousand people live here. Colonial houses graced with wrought iron balconies and draped in bougainvillea line palm and baobab shaded lanes. The peaceful atmosphere of today belies the island’s sad past.
Visit La Maison Des Esclaves (the Slave House) which was built by the Dutch in 1786 and renovated in 1990. Tour the Gorée Museum, which contains exhibits devoted to the history of the island and make a stop at the infamous 'door of no return.' Walk the length and breadth of the isle as your guide recounts the stories of those long-gone days. Finally pause for a spot of lunch at a local restaurant.
After lunch, the private ferry will return you to the mainland. The tour finishes at the port in Dakar in time for embarkation aboard MS Spitsbergen.
Please note that the order of the sites visited may vary.
