Itinerary for your Pre-Program
Day 1: San Jose/Arrival
Individual arrival at your hotel where you will spend the night. Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.
Day 2: San Jose/La Fortuna/Volcano Arenal Area
After breakfast at the hotel, you will meet your local guide, who will accompany you on your transfer to the town of La Fortuna, home of the magnificent Arenal Volcano. On your way there, stop to visit La Paz Waterfall Gardens, located in a private park. We recommend bringing a jacket as the park ranges in altitude from 4,200 to 5,200 feet and it can get chilly when the clouds roll in.
This nature park and animal sanctuary offers a lush tropical rain forest, flowing white rivers, spectacular waterfalls, and plenty of safe walking trails. Beside an orchid garden, don´t miss the butterfly and hummingbird gardens with 26 documented species, including hummingbird hand feeding in the mornings and afternoons. See a small serpentarium with native snakes, visit a section with wild animals like jaguars, pumas, ocelots, jaguarundi, and margays, among other attractions.
Enjoy lunch in a nearby restaurant before driving to your hotel. Your hotel is set in a lush tropical reserve near La Fortuna. The reserve spans over 900 acres and is home to Costa Rica’s largest network of naturally flowing hot springs. Dinner at your hotel and overnight.
Day 3: La Fortuna/Volcano Arenal Area
After breakfast, you’re in for some unforgettable highlights.
This morning, enjoy the sights and the sounds of the rainforest and experience its peace as we quietly paddle the Peñas Blancas river. Monkeys, sloths, iguanas, crocodiles, and numerous tropical birds await! Our professional bilingual guide will share educational and interesting explanations with you about the plants and animals we encounter while floating. Truly appreciate the wonders of Peñas Blancas river and the surrounding rainforest as we travel down the river without a motor. Enjoy the journey quietly, just rowing and taking photos. Make sure to bring your camera and binoculars on this tour!
After eating lunch at a local restaurant in La Fortuna, it’s time to explore the forest from the treetops.
The Arenal Hanging Bridges are a primary forest reserve spanning 618 acres. It features a 1.9 miles trail through the rainforest that allows you to take in nature’s beauty at its most pristine. With 15 bridges ranging from 16.4 to 328 feet long (one of which is located at 150 feet above the ground), you will have a 360° view of the tropical rainforest. If the weather cooperates, you will see the most amazing views of Arenal volcano.
Have a relaxing evening with dinner at the nearby restaurant and overnight stay.
Day 4: La Fortuna/Arenal Volcano Area/Puntarenas
Spend a leisurely morning at the hotel for breakfast and enjoy the facilities at your leisure. You could also take a dip in one of the warm, mineralized river pools before savoring another tasty Costa Rican lunch.
In the afternoon, we will transfer you to Puntarenas Pier where MS Fridtjof Nansen awaits.
Please note that the order of sights might vary.
