Our first stop will be at the Castro de Viladonga, an archeological complex whose site and monographic museum date to the late Roman period, between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD. It features several walls and moats. See defensive structures and living quarters, as well as the wealth of objects found at the archeological site (select objects are exhibited in the museum). They all show that Castro de Viladonga was settled or occupied for ages and was especially important between the second and fifth centuries. Next we will visit Lugo, whose city wall was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. With a perimeter stretching 1.3 miles and a height ranging from 26 to 33 feet, with 71 of the 85 original towers and 10 entrance gates still standing, the walls are an obvious and well-preserved testimony to the city’s thriving past as a hub of a gold-rich region. The Roman bridge over the River Miño is also of great historical interest. It is 341 feet long and 13 feet wide and was rebuilt and repaired many times over the centuries.

Inside the walls stands St. Mary’s Cathedral, a Romanesque church that houses the chapel dedicated to San Froilán, the city’s patron saint. It features the Perpetual Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament, also featured on the coat of arms of the city.
