Magnus Winvold | Historian and Storyteller

From the Norwegian coast to remote destinations, there are few myths, legends or tales that Magnus is yet to hear.

Bringing history to life

If there is a historical story to tell then it will be our Historian and Storyteller Magnus who will know how to do it justice. His Hurtigruten story started back as a child growing up in Trondheim, where he saw the Original Coastal Express calling into town and this sparked a wanderlust for travel onboard our ships.

In 2015, Magnus joined the Hurtigruten family on board MS Nordlys to discover the vibrant history and heritage all along the beautiful Norwegian coastline. For the next five years, Magnus would uncover many stories and tales to share with his guests, personal favourites include that of Fridtjof Nansen and Ohthere of Hålogaland - both equally inspiring yet tragic. Knowing there were more stories to discover, in 2020 he moved across to join the Expedition Team, ironically his first ship being MS Fridtjof Nansen and later in 2021, MS Maud.

Magnus’s passion for history and storytelling is profound. It acts as a place where the fact and fiction of our past come together. Whatever the destination, there are local myths and legends to discover, learn and decipher, bringing about a deeper understanding of people and their cultures.

Best part of MS Maud | History section

Naturally, our historians' favourite part of MS Maud is the History section. Whilst not out on excursions, Magnus likes to spend time amongst the artefacts and displays, sharing their stories with our guests to give them a more rounded and deeper understanding of the places we visit.

Favourite destination | St Kilda

We sail to a wide array of destinations, each with its own individual story and history to tell. If Magnus had to pick one stand-out port it would be St Kilda. The remains of the village offer a rare glimpse into life on these remote islands and how ultimately it ended with the evacuation in 1930.

Stories | Nansen & Ohthere

After many years at sea, Magnus has heard and told many stories, however, the inspiring and tragic story of Norwegian Explorer Fridtjof Nansen is perhaps his favourite. Nansen led the first crossing of Greenland in 1888 and most notably attempted to reach the North Pole on Fram between 1893 and 1896.
