Thore Sager | Environmental Specialist

Pronounced the same as the Norse God and Hero - Thore is rock god and a hero when it comes to sharing his passion for geology with others.

Leaving no stone unturned

Another of our newest members of the Expedition Team is environmental specialist Thore, who joined the Hurtigruten family in September 2022. It was through his parents that he made the decision to join the crew. As former guests on an expedition cruise, they noticed the opportunity to bring geology into the Expedition Team.

As he completes his first season of sailings around the British Isles, his favourite port of call has been St Kilda. These rare geological formations have played a key role in this unique part of Scotland's history. With his passion for gaining a better and deeper understanding of the world and its geology, there is but one destination that stands out to visit - Antarctica. This frozen wonderland is full of rare geological formations and a destination so remote, few scientists get to visit.

Currently in the process of studying for a Ph.D. in Geology, Thore has a fascination for the natural world and wants to help our guests build a better understanding of the landscapes we explore. As we sail to remote places few others voyage, we uncover a plethora of geological wonders - more than enough to get Thore, and all buddying geologists, excited to travel with us.

Fun facts | Geology rocks

When you have a rock, you are able to use it as a pivot to a wide range of other topics. By having an understanding of geology and the natural world, it is clear to see how everything is related and interlinked.

Guest story | Sharing his passion

Being the Environmental Specialist onboard MS Maud, Thore is keen to share his passion for geology and the natural world with our guests. For him, the best bit of his job is when he meets guests who share that same passion and collectively they are able to examine the local landscapes.

Pro tip | What can guests expect

Despite being relatively new to the team on MS Maud, Thore has been able to experience the hidden gems of the British Isles. His pro tip for this expedition is that by attending the lectures onboard, you will be able to get a better understanding of the landscapes and ports around you.
