Spectacular landscape and viewpoints with plenty of photo opportunities
Explore local Viking history and visit the largest Viking longhouse ever found.
Step back in time hundreds of years as you visit the fishing village museum of Å.
Crossing three islands of ever-changing but always beautiful scenery, the first stop is a step back in time: the fishing village museum of Å. See how the people of Lofoten have made their living for thousands of years. Walk between the old buildings and learn more about the history of the fishing industry and the yearly fishing cycle, starting when small boats catch cod on the open sea in spring and preserve it as food for seasons to come. Then you will travel across the Lofoten islands to the Lofotr Viking Museum, a site still surrounded by farmland, just as it was in the Viking Era. This lively museum features a reconstruction of the largest Viking longhouse found anywhere in the world. The weapons in the longhouse are all replicas, so you can play Viking to your heart’s content! For those less inclined to take up arms, they can admire the skill used to recreate the world of over a thousand years ago, or the skills still on display by the craftspeople. The archeological discoveries from the site are housed in a separate building, which also features a souvenir shop, a café, and other displays. Both on the way to and back from Lofotr Viking Museum, we will make stops for photos at scenic places like Flakstad beach, where surfers have started hanging out to enjoy the waves, or the local church.
