Begin your tour with a visit to the oldest Sons of Norway Lodge in Alaska, where the community takes great pleasure in sharing and promoting their Norwegian heritage. The unique building dates back to 1912 when 60 charter members borrowed money and sold $5.00 shares in order to construct the building in a style similar to early barns in the American Mid-West.

Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea when you enter the hall, along with a selection of homemade Norwegian pastries including lefse, skorpa, and almond puff.

A lifelong resident of the community will give you a glimpse into life in Petersburg, both now and in the past. Learn about the town’s history and how they keep Norwegian heritage alive. Norwegian-style dancers will perform for you wearing the Petersburg bunad (traditional dress), designed by a local community member, which features embroidery with local wildflowers.

After leaving Sons of Norway hall, be sure to visit the Bojer Wikan Fishermen’s Memorial Park adjacent to the hall, a memorial dedicated in 2000 to those lost at sea. Our Viking ship, the Vallhalla, resides there along with beautiful flower boxes, benches, memorial plaques and a bronze statue of Bojer Wikan, a long-time fisherman who promoted the idea of the park.
