Robert Vrabel | Activity Guide

From Slovakia to Svalbard, Robert brings together his love of the wild and of broadening the minds of others to his dream job.

The call of the wild

As one of three Activity Guides onboard MS Maud, Robert is the ship’s answer to action man. Born in Slovakia, he had the call for outdoor life and relocated to Svalbard, Norway for its unique ecology, rugged landscapes, and true wilderness adventure. Keen to share in the unique beauty of Svalbard, Robert joined Hurtigruten Svalbard leading tours, excursions, and adventures across the various islands.

It was on one of these tours that Robert had one of his most memorable wildlife experiences. On a kayaking trip through the fjords and islands, his group was approached by some Beluga Whales. The pair of whales spent time getting to know their human guests, swimming around and underneath the kayaks. This ability to bring our guests closer to nature and wildlife is one of the best things about his job. After 5 years with Hurtigruten Svalbard, Robert moved across to Hurtigruten Expeditions and joined the team on MS Maud.

Being a part of the Expedition Team is his dream come true. Not only does it allow him to continue enjoying the outdoor life but also able to share this with guests and learn more about their lives, backgrounds and cultures. When not onboard our expedition ships, he can be found at home on Svalbard.

Advice | Polar Bears & Svalbard

When not onboard MS Maud, Robert can be found at home on Svalbard - the home of polar bears. But he shares that there is more to this beautiful landscape than these majestic creatures. Keep your eyes open for everything and fall in love with these islands just like he did.

Northern Lights | Be in the moment

Living underneath the Auroral Zone brings many sightings of the magical Northern Lights. Robert's most memorable came during a snowstorm, where he laid back on the snow and enjoyed this fantastic light show instead of taking pictures and viewing through the lens. Something he encourages all our guests to do!

Why Hurtigruten?

Robert was drawn to join the team at Hurtigruten Svalbard, and then Hurtigruten Expeditions, due to the company’s focus on sustainability. This reflects his own personal beliefs on the importance of protecting the natural world and having the ability to share these life-changing experiences with guests from around the world.
