Embarkation Day

Location: Lisbon

Your sea voyage begins. At check in, you will receive your expedition jacket, meet the expedition team and crew and attend the mandatory safety drill. As the engines rumble and MS Midnatsol pulls away from land, we can look ahead at the vast ocean and realise the next bit of land is Cape Verde.

Days 2-5

Sailing South Towards Cape Verde

Location: At Sea

Spend time on deck to truly enjoy the feeling of being at sea. Take in the fresh and salt air and watch for seabirds gracefully following our ship. The changing colours of the horizon are mesmerising: first blue, then gold, then white. A school of dolphins may suddenly pop up next to the vessel.

As Jacques Cousteau said: "The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever". Our spacious ship offers lounges where you can socialise or find solitude, with panoramic windows that perfectly display the seascape. If you wish to be more active, take advantage of the outdoor Jacuzzi, fitness centre or sauna to relax and rejuvenate. Our expedition team will schedule lectures and share their knowledge and experience. You will also have a chance to look behind the scenes, visit the bridge, and learn about the serious business of navigation.

Cape Verdean Charm

Location: Praia

In the afternoon, we arrive in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde. The Cape Verde Islands were discovered in the beginning of the 15th century. Travellers frequently used them as a stop to take on food and water. The useful location led to attacks by many famous pirates and privateers. Explore the vibrant city on your own or join one of our optional excursions.

Days 7-11

Crossing the Atlantic

Location: At Sea

We head out into the open Atlantic. This great ocean has long represented the unknown, with legends, mysteries, danger, and beauty all adding to its mystique through millennia.

As we draw further and further from the last outposts of land, the realisation of the immense, peaceful power of nature settles over everyone on board.  Vast horizons surround us under constantly changing skies, and the sudden appearance of birds or marine life creates ripples of excitement. Enjoy superb food with new (or old) friends, take part in the many activities on offer, or soak away your cares in the Jacuzzi. But most of all, you can use the time at sea to unhook. Disconnect.  Relax. These days are yours to enjoy.

The elements dance before us. Some days may seem grey with rain showers. Suddenly, the sun shines through.  Clouds tumble and scatter, the sky changing from orange to red to violet; a photographer´s dream.

As we approach Belem, we enjoy the final sunset of our voyage and hold a Farewell gathering with the Captain, Officers and expedition team.

Our equator countdown will begin. We are changing hemispheres, after all, so we must ask permission from Neptune to cross the magic line. Everyone aboard can be baptized by King Neptune and become blessed with his special protection.

Day 12

One Journey Ends, Another Bekons

Location: Belem

Belém lies on the bank of the river Para, part of the extensive river system of the Amazon basin. Strolling the town, you will come across great squares, a fantastic market and several historic buildings set along broad avenues. Belém was called "the city of mango trees", and you will still find many of them in the streets and parks. The harbour is situated at 1° 27’S, almost on the Equator - and this is where we to complete our Atlantic crossing. For some, the end of this journey marks the start of a new adventure, as they will stay on board to explore the Gems of the Brazilian Coast. For those who disembark and return home, or set off on a South American voyage, this epic ocean crossing ends in the Belem, the gateway to the Amazon.
