Kirkenes – Gateway to the East
Kirkenes, located in far northeast Norway some 250 miles above the Arctic Circle, is known as the capital of the Barents Region.
Just 10 miles away from the Russian border, it´s not surprising that 10% of the people in Kirkenes (Киркенес) are Russian. Kirkenes is also Hurtigruten´s turning point.
This is a place of great contrasts: from the indigenous traditional ways of the Sami people to modern industrial society all in one generation. History buffs will rejoice! You can see remnants from the Russian Revolution and learn about the Winter War between Russia and Finland, 1939 – 40. You also learn about the region´s near total destruction during World War II, and the tense border relationship between NATO member Norway and the USSR during the Cold War. Kirkenes is steeped in significant European history. As a visitor, you feel its ominous historic vibe.
