From Antarctica to Svalbard - Prepare to Plant Your Flag!

In 1911, Roald Amundsen planted the Norwegian flag at the South Pole. Now it's time for you to plant yours.

Planting a flag is a symbol of achievement. For some, this symbol is reserved for summiting Mount Everest. For others, spending the night under a tent in their own backyard is worth celebrating. With Hurtigruten’s new Explorer fleet, you'll have the chance to plant your personal flag, whatever that may mean, in some of the most exciting and remote areas in the world.

Exploring New Waters Since 1896

Location: The World's Most Incredible Destinations

The original Fram was the most famous vessel of its time, and the achievements of her expeditions are unparalleled. As part of Fridtjof NansenÕs expedition, she was the first ship to sail across the Arctic Ocean. Then she was used by Otto Sverdrup to survey the Canadian territory of Nunavut, the largest area to be surveyed on a single expedition at that time. Most famous of all, she took Roald Amundsen to his starting point in Antarctica as he raced to reach the South Pole.

Expanding Into New Territories

Location: The World's Most Incredible Destinations

In 2002 Hurtigruten launched its first expeditions to Antarctica, and expeditions to Greenland were soon to follow. Both destinations have a strong heritage for Norwegian explorers. In 2007, our new explorer vessel was delivered and named after NansenÕs Fram. Today, our expedition ships sail to Greenland, Iceland, Spitsbergen, and Antarctica, giving our passengers lifelong memories from the most extreme destinations in the world. As of 2016, MS Fram, MS Midnatsol, and MS Nordstjernen will be accompanied by MS Spitsbergen, taking explorers to the distant shores of the most easterly province of Newfoundland in Canada, deep into GreenlandÕs fjords, and to the coastline of the British Isles.

Young Explorers Program

Location: The World's Most Incredible Destinations

HurtigrutenÕs Young Explorers Program on MS Midnatsol is designed to give children between the ages of 7 and 13 a scientific introduction to the Arctic and the rapid melting of the ice. One of HurtigrutenÕs main goals is to enlighten children about how fragile the Earth really is, especially in polar areas such as Antarctica. On expeditions to Antarctica with MS Midnatsol, we dedicate one staff member to lead our new Young Explorers Program. On embarkation day, thereÕll be a special meet and greet event for children where theyÕll be introduced to all the exciting things theyÕll experience on their voyage to Antarctica.

Science Center For All Ages

Location: The World's Most Incredible Destinations

At Hurtigruten, we want to take our science exploration one step further. In addition to our science lectures, which will still be the primary information source, we are proud to introduce our brand new science center. Here, guests can be more Ôhands-onÕ by performing their own science experiments. The program is complimentary, although guests will be asked to sign up for sessions with our biologists and geologists due to limited space and equipment. Our science center will feature biological and geological microscopes, which will be used during small group sessions.

The New Age Of Exploration

In July 2018, Hurtigruten will add a brand new ship to its fleet: the MS Roald Amundsen. The state of the art vessel features new and environmentally sustainable hybrid technology that will reduce fuel consumption and show the world that hybrid propulsion on large ships is possible. MS Roald Amundsen is the first of two hybrid ships Hurtigruten will add to its fleet over the next few years, cutting emissions by sailing with electrical propulsion. The future of sailing will be silent and emission free.
